ALA Platinum Chapter Award

Happy Birthday to us! The Indiana Chapter is celebrating its 40th year in 2014! What a great way to start off the year and focus on what we can do to make the next 40 years even better for Indiana Legal Administrators.

Our Chapter has approximately 75 members representing private law firms from solo practitioners to some of the nation’s largest law firms, government agencies, and corporate legal departments throughout Indiana. The members are comprised of legal administrators with expertise in the areas of finance, HR, marketing, benefits, general administration, facilities management and everything in between. Through the help and participation of many of our wonderful members, we were able to earn the highest Presidents’ Award of Excellence and received the Platinum award for the third year in a row in 2013! We are able to accomplish this level of success because of our members and how we work well together and enjoy each other's company! There is no better way to grow in the legal field than with the support of ALA.

On behalf of our entire Chapter, I would like to take this opportunity to thank our many loyal Business Partners who have been supportive of our Chapter for many years and to welcome those Business Partners who are new to our Chapter this year. We thank you for the many privileges and educational opportunities you afford us through your generous sponsorships and your business and product advice in all areas of our daily work lives. If you are interested in becoming a Business Partner, you can contact Nancy Huffman at

One of our greatest achievements as a Chapter was the development and ongoing work with students at Shortridge Magnet High School for Law and Public Policy through the L.I.F.E. Beyond Shortridge Program. This program provides training and mentoring to students who enter the program with many applying for internships with local law firms and business partners. This year we are looking at a record 14 interns with one being hired by our business partner, IST who also supports this valuable program. Many of these students are going on to college to further their education, and we have had some students continue to work with their internship employer even after they graduated from Shortridge. This program would not have been possible without the vision of Jenny Ellis and efforts of Abigail DeCoursey who manages the internship program as well as our members and business partners who actively participated to help grow this program from the ground up! The L.I.F.E program was recognized at our Regional ALA Meeting and we have been asked to assemble materials so it can be duplicated across the country. If you are interested in participating by giving one of these students an internship opportunity this summer, please contact Abigail at and she will be happy to assist you.

The Chapter conducts monthly educational luncheon meetings which encompass a variety of timely topics. If you are not a current member and would like to attend a luncheon, please contact me ( and you are welcome to attend as my guest. I am confident you will come away with an understanding and appreciation of the value the Chapter can provide to you and your firm. If you aren't able to attend a luncheon, we have podcasts as well as copies of slides available for you to view post-meeting.

With the payment of your dues there are several programs and networking opportunities made available. In addition to the monthly educational luncheon meetings, we have:

  • Day long Educational Forum (March)
  • Golf Outing with Members and Business Partners (July)
  • Managing Partner Dinner (September)
  • Community Connections Service Project (October)
  • Holiday Lunch (December)
  • Special Networking Events with Business Partners throughout the year (Indians Game, social hour at various Firms and Venues)
  • Periodic extended educational seminars

Please take a moment to review the Calendar of Events and plan to attend as many of the activities as possible. For more information on joining ALA, please contact Shawn Severns at
